The Royal Cinque Ports Golf Course (often referred to as Deal) was established in February 1892 and in 1909 and 1920 the Royal Cinque Ports Club hosted the British Open. The Royal Cinque Ports Club hosted the British Open in 1909 and 1920, and two other editions were planned for 1938 and 1949, but due to unusually high tides flooding the course, both tournaments were relocated to the nearby Royal St George's course.
This is an absolutely difficult links course to play. Its back nine, or last seven holes, are very difficult to play, always into the prevailing south-westerly wind. The layout is spartan and cold, with only the dunes and wild dune grass adding real character to this narrow back and forth layout. The fairways can be tight and overhanging, making for awkward stands.
